Dr. Lindley Zerbe
Dr. Lindley
Zerbe was born and raised on the Monterey Peninsula. After graduating Summa cum Laude from Carmel High School, he attended Stanford
University where he received both his bachelors and masters of science
degrees.
After
Stanford, with an adventurous spirit, Dr. Zerbe moved to Singapore to take a position as an associate scientist at the National University of Singapore
(NUS). Through a stroke of luck and fate, the first day he began work he
was presented with the opportunity to apply and compete for a position on the
NUS Everest Team. The leadership of the university wanted to do something
extraordinary to celebrate its 100th anniversary. They had
decided that sending a team of students, staff and alumni from the university
to attempt Everest would represent their commitment to teamwork, excellence and
determination in the face of adversity.
Dr. Zerbe
spent nights and weekends training, competing for, and winning, a spot on the
final team. Early in the process he was named team leader and, through
hard work, determination and dedication, on May 31st, 2005,
summitted Mt. Everest with several of his teammates.
Dr. Zerbe’s
pathway to dentistry began with providing healthcare to people in great need
while on mountaineering expeditions in Nepal, Tibet and Pakistan. While
on the Everest team, he volunteered to be the team’s medic and so was mentored
by the team’s physician in Singapore in high altitude and wilderness
medicine. One thing that he noticed was particularly lacking in these
poorer areas was dental care. This and an experience he had in Pakistan
where he and a teammate recemented a fellow climber’s crown that had fallen out
and took her out of pain, left a strong impression and set him on the road to
dentistry.
Shortly after Everest, Dr. Zerbe attended the UCLA School of
Dentistry and, through hard work and a commitment to excellence, graduated top of his class, achieving the distinction of Magna Cum Laude. Dr. Zerbe was also inducted into the OKU honors dental society and received awards for excellence in oral and maxillofacial radiology, public health dentistry, and oral and maxillofacial surgery.
Dr. Zerbe has served as a board member for the Monterey Bay Dental Society for the last 5 years in charge of community relations and was recently voted in as President for 2019.
In addition to serving the dental society, Dr. Zerbe is committed to expanding, honing and refining his dental skills and to that end, regularly attends continuing education courses covering various dental topics, from orthodontics to implantology. He is also a member of two local dental study groups, Dental Pearls and Spear Dental Education. He has recently become a member of the Spear Faculty Club and frequently takes trips to the Spear Dental Education Headquarters in Scottsdale, AZ to learn the latest dental techniques.
Dr. Zerbe and his wife, Laura, reside on the
Monterey Peninsula, and recently welcomed a new addition to the family, Joseph, on August 8th, 2018 and is already getting along well with his big brother, John, who just turned five.
Dr. Wayne Richey
Dr. Richey grew up in Southern California and attended USC as an undergraduate. He graduated from Creighton University School of Dentistry in Omaha, NE and then returned to California to take over the dental practice of a lifelong friend and mentor. In addition to a practicing dentist, Dr. Richey was made a Fellow of the Southern California Academy of Oral Pathology, served as a longtime member of their Board, and also as Academy President. In order to benefit the underserved community of Southern California, Dr. Richey teamed with the School Board and The Community Hospital to establish and become the director for The Children’s Health Clinic in Orange County, CA. This clinic provided dental care to underprivileged children in the area.
Dr. Richey has always participated in post graduate studies and training to expand and refine his skills as a dental provider. After practicing dentistry for 30 years in Orange County, CA and seeing his children off to college, he and his wife made the decision to move to Monterey in 1997. They love the Monterey Peninsula and now consider it home.
In his spare time Dr. Richey has always loved the outdoors and staying fit. For many years, he has participated in triathlons, including finishing twenty-one Ironman distance triathlons--including four World Championships in Hawaii. He also spent 17 years as a Scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts; during this time he coached nearly 50 boys to obtain the rank of Eagle Scout--a rank he earned himself as a young scout. As a Scoutmaster he developed a love for mountain climbing. He has successfully summited Mt. Whitney, the Grand Teton in WY, and The Matterhorn in Switzerland. Dr. Richey also helps put on the Big Sur International Marathon and continues to run marathons to this day.
